This group of architects, builders and developers; green building certification organizations; and climate advocates has come together around common cause: how can we promote policies that support rapid market transformation toward Zero Net Carbon building?
Modeled after the Brussels Exemplary Buildings Program, 20 by 2020 aims to support the design and construction in the Seattle region of 20 buildings, 20,000sf or larger, with an Energy Use Intensity of 20 or better.
This innovative transaction structure treats buildings as power plants that produce and sell the negawatts generated by energy efficiency. MEETS clears a major obstacle to deep energy efficiency because it solves the split incentive problem and rewards investors in building efficiency with the full return of ongoing energy savings for at least 20 years.
